LIGHT UP YOUR NIGHT
When it comes to creating the perfect environment for your event, lighting can be an afterthought. Depending on the time of day for the event and the time of year, your event might start in full daylight and end under the stars. Adding ambient lighting as part of the party décor can create a magical transformation to the look feel of the party space. Here are a few of our favorite ways to add some glimmer and gleaming light to your next event!
CENTERPIECES WITH CANDLES & LANTERNS
It may seem too simple but a small votive, lantern, birdcage, jar or hurricane vase with a real flame or LED candle is the perfect accent that looks great during daylight hours, and can transform into more of a focal point with a warm ambient mood at nighttime.
MANTLES, SHELVES AND TABLE DÉCOR
Indoor events at Willowdale Estate are known for their warm glow coming from the chandeliers and wall sconces but we also add twinkle lights outside in some winter months, and decorate our iconic Great Room mantle in the month of December. One trick we have used for multiplying the appearance of reflective light is by using vessels with mirrored or metallic surfaces. This will not only give off light from within, but reflect the light coming from other candles or lights in the room.
BISTRO / STRING LIGHTS
For outdoor events in our Garden Courtyard or Sperry Tent, we love the use of paper lanterns, bistro lights, colored uplights and more modern installations like chandeliers, grapevine spheres with twinkle lights, pinspot lighting, and a patterned lighting design on the tent canopy or a monogram on the dance floor.
So take a moment to consider light before hosting your next event- and if you need more suggestions or inspiration check out our latest pins from events in all seasons here: Willowdale Estate on Pinterest
REAL WEDDING: Nicole & Paul
Dan Aguirre Photography captured all the special details Nicole & Paul incorporated into their crisp autumn wedding day. The couple utilized a color palette representative of the rich colors of fall and artfully displayed an impressive amount of books & literature to decorate the estate.
Nicole and her bridesmaids got ready in the bright and spacious wedding suite. All the windows help to exuviate a bright sunlit glow that encompasses the room. Using this great space, Nicole artfully displayed matching canvas bags filled with treats as a surprise for her bridesmaids.
The bridesmaids looked stunning wearing an assortment of long dresses in sparkling gold and silver mixed with softer tones of black and gray. Flowing bright red bouquets prerpared by Foret Design Studio created a dazzling contrast against the different colors and textures of their eclectic dresses.
Before the ceremony took place, the groomsmen relaxed in the Equestrian Lounge with an assortment of sandwiches & fruit and cheese platters prepared on-site by Willowdale Kitchens.
The groomsmen look dashing in their burgundy dress pants and assorted gray and brown suit jackets. To distinguish himself as the groom, Paul wears a classic black suit and burgundy tie with a matching rose boutonniere.
The ceremony took place in our gorgeous butterfly garden courtyard surrounded by the unique fieldstone of the estate. The couple stood in front of a birch arbor decorated with leaves and flowers while strands of glowing bistro lights hovered over them.
Bourbon & Vodka based “His” & “Hers” signature drinks were passed by our servers during cocktail hour. Rustic chalkboard signage was used to promote the festive cocktails!
The focal point of the glass Conservatory during cocktail hour displayed an impressive arch made completely out of of books and was connected on each side by two small bookcases. This custom piece was crafted by the Seaborne Family in 2013 and was the perfect fit for these literature lovers.
The reception tables were set with gold colored flatware, goblets, chargers and burgundy napkins rented from Peterson Party Center. Detailed paper flowers crafted by the bride and created from the pages of the classic Jane Austen novel, “Pride & Prejudice” embellished the place settings.
A unique and seasonal dessert option for couples who get married in the fall is a caramel apple bar. Complete with skewered apple slices, pretzels, nuts, Oreo bits, M&M’s and warm caramel & chocolate sauces.
Congratulations to Nicole & Paul! We really enjoyed their unique style and we hope you do too!

FALL WEDDING STYLE
The Autumnal Equinox was on September 23rd marking the official start of fall so we thought we could give you a look back at a wedding that was almost exactly 1 year ago. Ali and Andrew’s wedding day style is rustic and romantic, using pretty details like lanterns, burlap, and lace.
Ali’s wedding day look is the definition of pin-worthy. A loosely braided chignon with the elegant neckline the lace trimmed Romona Keveza wedding dress. The intricate textures and unique blooms featured in the bride’s bouquet from Dogwood Floral Design are lovely, and we loved how the natural ivory bridesmaids’ dresses helped the pops of color in the flowers to jump out. This burgundy color is very close to the pantone color marsala and we love these deep reds for autumn weddings– it really is a perfect fall color!
COCKTAIL HOUR DÉCOR
The personal style of the wedding party worked with the décor perfectly. As guests entered the house they saw a tall floral design with ceremony programs and a welcome sign. The handwritten sign, escort cards and details around the house were made with help from Ali’s mom! Guests enjoyed His & Her Signature Sips and a selection of passed appetizers and our curated cheese and crudités display.
Our sperry tent was lit with bistro lights hanging from the center poles and a collection of large lanterns and votives with real candles. Using a mixture of farm tables with burlap and ivory runners, and round tables with ivory linens the tent looked perfectly romantic and effortlessly rustic. With just a touch of flowers, some pretty white pumpkins, and birch table number holders this table is both interesting and elegant.
Details After Dark
Ali and Andrews beautiful September wedding was recently featured on Style Me Pretty with lots of gorgeous photos from by Erin McGinn Photography and flowers from Dogwood Floral Design. We love the pretty portraits and details of the day, but we wanted to “shed some light” on the fun wedding details that can keep the party going all night long!
This savvy bride and groom thought of everything for their guests including shawls to keep warm for the when the sun goes down and heart shaped party shades to dance the night away underneath our Sperry Tent.
The perfect weather allowed guests to enjoy the outdoor bar and bistro lighting in our courtyard when they needed a break from dancing.
The night ended with a visit from the Whoo(pie) Wagon where guests could choose their favorite whoopie pie flavor before heading home.
We hope these details after dark inspire you for your own wedding or event!

Spring Blooms In Our Garden Courtyard
Spring is a special time of year at Willowdale when our butterfly garden courtyard comes alive and kicks off the start of our tent season.
Tulips and daffodils are the main attraction of the courtyard in the spring, which creates the perfect backdrop for wedding ceremonies and themed outdoor events.
As the weather gets warmer and summer begins, our colorful annuals, daisies and zinnias begin to appear and last through the fall season.
Our evolving butterfly garden courtyard and Sperry Tent serve as a beautiful event space for outdoor events from May to October.
